Reading Alan Roxburgh's The Sky is Falling. Most helpful book about church leadership in a period of change and transition. Begs the question as to whether I am Liminal or Emergent though (if it really even matters!). The 5 stages of change he mentions are most illuminating, and takes some of the fear away from life in the 4th "Transition" stage, because we know that is from where, like the Jews in Babylon, we rediscover the presence and purposes of God and can look forward to the reformation stage!
He points out that people living with discontinuous change respond by moving in one of two directions, 1 back to their prior traditions and habits, or 2 abandon the old and create a new future, in both cases to escape from the confusion and to regain control again. He argues that both are wrong as they do not provide an answer as to how to live in the transition stage which will continue, and from which we flee! Rather than planning our escape, we need to let it emerge in God's time! Ultimately, he argues, only by letting go and revisiting primary narratives and traditions of Christian life (Scripture and the Spirit?) will we find the way forward. So that seems to me to be back to discipleship and early church models!
